Shared logins are risky for all connected accounts

Graphic with a red pause button, a yellow check mark, and a green play button and the words pause, verify, report you underneath.

Some apps offer signing up using a shared social media or email login, such as Facebook, Google, or Amazon, designed to connect your accounts and make it easier to access.

Unfortunately, these universal logins can be thought of as a “master key” to all of your personal information. Hackers and fraudsters can not only access your data, they can lock you out from each one of these connected accounts. Separate logins can segregate accounts, making it harder for a successful fraudster to steal data and money, and making it harder to recover.

Action Steps

PAUSE before connecting multiple social media or other personal accounts together using shared logins. Verify that all your accounts have separate user IDs, passwords and multifactor authentication. This may take a minute longer to log in, but is worth it in the event of an attack.
