Secure your virtual workstation by giving your Wi-Fi a new name

Graphic with a red pause button, a yellow check mark, and a green play button and the words pause, verify, report at work underneath.

State employees teleworking from home can add an additional layer of protection to their virtual workstations by changing the default name and password on their home Wi-Fi router. This is the easiest and best way to prevent most outside attacks and avoid disruptions from stolen data and a compromised network.

Action Steps

Verify how to change the router’s assigned name and password. Consult your internet service provider’s online instructions, or contact their customer service process.

Assign a new name and password that is long (16+ characters) and unique (not used on other accounts). You’ll then have to update the passwords on all your Wi-Fi connected devices.

This simple step takes a few minutes and is the best way to secure your virtual workstation and work network. It will also protect friends and family who are visiting and using your Wi-Fi to connect to the internet.
