Don’t Panic if you See Scareware

Cybersecurity Awareness Month / #31Days of Cybersecurity

Scareware is malicious software or texts that pop up with a message telling you that your computer or mobile devices is infected with malware and you must follow a link or select a button to fix the problem, or download software. Don’t panic and do not click on anything. Just Pause! Users who fall victim to this trick may allow in malware, ransomware, and malicious programs that can turn off antivirus protections and allow for a larger attack.

If you see a suspicious pop-up on your work device, stop and contact your IT department immediately from another device. Your IT staff will walk you through the steps to safely exit the browser and then scan your computer. Just exiting the page may not be enough, so if this happens to you, be sure to report it to your IT staff.

If this happens on your mobile device close the window WITHOUT clicking on any prompt.  Uninstall your browser and reinstall.  You can also follow the browser guidance for clearing your browsing data.  Run a virus or malware scan on your phone.  Always make sure to update your phone, browsers and virus protection when updates are available.

See CTR Cyber for additional resources and links for cyber alerts, and contact [email protected] with any incidents or suspected incidents of fraud.
